The Reason I Jump: A Review.

Image
Anyone who knows me (either online or in 'the real life') will know that I spend (far too much) time reviewing films that most folk would class as unreviewable - and in some cases unwatchable - this is probably because I'm very easily pleased when it comes to cinema but mostly because the remit for my film blog is to be as funny (OK as childish) as possible. Plus other than saying 'I like that!' I actually find it really difficult at times to express how much I love something in words, it's much easier to flap about and cry if somethings brilliant*. Which is hard to put across in a blog I'm sure you'll agree. Which is probably why it always ends up reading like a rejected Talbot Rothwell Carry On script. All that changed tho' when I discovered that the National Theatre of Scotland were staging an outdoor production/adaptation of Naoki Higashida’s book The Reason I Jump, especially when I found out that our twin engines of destruction ha

Been a busy few weeks with precious little time for updates - still awaiting a reply from the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow for a review type meeting after my 'interesting' first visit (more on that at some point possibly) and still need to get to the Science Centre - but thought I'd write a little something about the National Theatre of Scotland’s adaptation (by Graham Eatough) of Naoki Higashida’s book The Reason I Jump which I'm off to see/review on Wednesday. It's as if Studio Ghibli was made flesh....which quite frankly is a good thing. Been interested in this adaptation since I heard about it not only because Naoki Higashida's book is so brilliant but because my girls school was involved in the production with their class helping to produce sound effects for it. The book, for those of you who've not read it, is Higashida's explanation of how an (his) autistic mind thinks, feels, perceives, and responds - as the blurb would say -

Been told that I'm way too positive when I blog here so thought I'd shake it up a wee bit  regarding the Drumwealth Games held recently in the Drumchapel area of Glasgow. An annual day of sport for pupils at Camstradden Primary, St Clare's Primary, Drummore School, Langfaulds Primary, Antonine Primary and Drumchapel High, the event is held over a number of venues in the area and it's one of those venues that is getting the prize of a harsh Paddington-style stare and a very loud tut. Stand up The Donald Dewar Centre for managing to be possibly the most Autistic (un)friendly venue I've visited recently - and on a day of inclusion too. As David Coleman would say/have said "Remarkable!". And before anyone says, yes I'm aware that venues such as sports centres, libraries etc. can't be totally Autism friendly but a good bar to have is maybe try to do it the day you have a fair few Autistic folk in? The day in question we arrived to f

Survived the school trip to Spain and desperately trying to catch up with everything (including this blog) - still got  few venues to visit and emails to send but that pesky real life vibe sometimes gets in the way. Regarding an earlier post that listed all the Glasgow Life venues that are (or are becoming) Autism friendly (you can find it here ) I thought I'd pop along to the one nearest to my house - lazy moi? - and ask them what the plan is. As with all Glasgow venues library and community centre staff are expected to complete basic Autism awareness training (the majority I've spoken to seem to have already) and the idea seems to be that although the venues aren't offering any Autism specific events they'll be geared toward making them much more understanding and inclusive to Autistic users and their families plus be able to offer information on groups and events etc. in the local area. As one of those people that puts awareness and understanding above fa
