Happy Birthday Ghostwatch!

Image
Can it really be 30 years since spookmiester supreme Stephen Volk invited us to spend Halloween night alongside the Early family and the pesky poltergeist Mr Pipes in their house on Foxhill Drive?....It's just that it seems that Ghostwatch has always been a part of our Halloween celebrations - not so much speaking to the nations psyche and its love of the supernatural as sneakily creeping up behind it and shouting "BOO!" as loud as it could before kidnapping its kids and locking itself in the cupboard under the stairs (or in our case in the hall). My biggest regret was that I never actually saw it on transmission being as I was out at a Halloween party (bizarrely actually dressed as Craig Charles – spooky eh?) so didn’t get to see it till early the next morning, soberingly strong coffee in hand and clutching a bowl of popcorn I sat transfixed – little knowing of the mayhem it caused (and the damp trousers) across Britain just a few hours earlier. From there...

It's at it again....

A quick repost of this fairly childish thing seeing as it's almost Halloween.... Enjoy. As you all know (probably) in the movie Micheal Myers stalks cutesy, bookish babysitter Laura Strode - on Halloween night - whilst wearing a William Shatner mask and this got me thinking is there more to this slasher classic than meets the eye? As mentioned here before , it's a well known fact that Shatner isn't the biggest fan of autistic folk (especially those who know their own mind) and is pretty upfront about this, so what if - in some timey-whimey turn of fate, John Carpenter was actually trying to warn us about this?* Seriously, if you think about it, the whole thing is very spooky. I mean what if Michael Myers wears the Shatner mask because he literally is Shatner, the blue overalls he wears symbolizing the whole autistic love for the colour, hoping it will draw us in whilst the knife symbolizes his cutting wit and repartee on Twitter as he puts us all in our place. Anyway think ...

First featured in Scottish Autism's Autitude Magazine I thought I'd share Amelia and Embeth's favourite freakishly fun family friendly films for Halloween here for those who haven't read it.   Corpse Bride (2005) Tim Burton's stop-motion classic - featuring the voices of Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Joanna Lumley and the fang-tastic Christopher Lee - centers on the poor lovelorn Victor and his bride to be Victoria whose parents arrange for the pair to be wed in the hope of elevating Victor's nouveau riche parents to the upper classes whilst restoring Victoria's families wealth and standing.  Although the pair hit it off immediately, Victor ruins their wedding rehearsal by forgetting his vows and setting Lady Everglot's dress on fire and so flees to a nearby forest where he spends the night practicing his vows on a tree and placing the wedding ring on an upturned root.  Scarily though the root is actually the finger of a dead woman named Emily, who ...

The thing I love about my job (and the various hobbies and things related to it)* is when you get to see the really bizarre juxtaposition of different projects I've been involved with. Today is the perfect example: I mean who else's career choices can go from cult horror to disability rights in two Tweets? *Not 'special interests'.....Fact.

Cassidy has a new hobby - he's been printing out bizarre shite and sellotaping it to ever more random places around the house (our bedroom, in the fridge, behind the TV etc.) and now we've caught him tagging the trolley shelters at Morrisons...

Drawing on Autism.

An animator’s ethical conundrum: how does he depict an Autistic person without reducing him to a caricature?  A seriously brilliant film by Alex Widdowson.   Drawing on Autism from Alex Widdowson on Vimeo .
