Seven Up!

Way, way back in the mists of time and when the universe was half its present size I decided (against my better judgement) to start this Autism blog partly because my adopted home town of Glasgow had decided to go all Autism-friendly even going as far as making a map of all the Spectrum-safe places in the city and awarding a rather spiffy Autism Aware badge to venues that are deemed worthy.

So seeing as I was bored one afternoon waiting for the girls to finish dance rehearsals I decided to go visit every single one of them (unannounced obviously) and review them all.

Yup, tell me you're Autistic without telling me you're Autistic.


 

 

Around the same time Glasgow City Council proudly (and somewhat foolishly you might say) decreed that by 2025 - or thereabouts - Glasgow would be 'the most Autistic friendly city in Europe'.

So here we are 7 years later and I've decided to revisit and re-review every one of those venues - well the ones that are still open obviously - and maybe even add some new ones and see how they're fairing on the Autism front now.

And to make it even more exciting I'm gonna be awarding a unique Autistic! Blog certificate to the best ones.

How's that for dedication?

So excited to finally be able to share our (award winning) little movie AUTISM PLAYS ITSELF with everyone.   A film shot in 1957 in at the Maudsley Hospital, London, captures the movements and behaviour of children under observation for atypical behaviour. In the present day, three autistic respondents watch the footage, bringing new insightful interpretations of the children’s behaviour as they explore the sparse environment of the clinic. Through speculation and identification, with wit and audacity, the responses forge a new soundtrack from an autistic point of view. As the film evolves, it takes on the rhythms and repetitions of the children’s activities, becoming a playful homage to the body language of autism. Autastic Review of The Year.

Well it's been a packed year here at Autastic Towers so thought I'd do a quick overview of the highs and lows of 2024 with a special mention to those who deserve extra credit. Warning tho' there'll probably be some time jumps (a bit like Doctor Who when it was good) as some of the stuff is either ongoing or linked plus expect heady amounts of swearing. And slight sarcasm. Enjoy.     Bizarrely looking back I spent most of January coping with my (stress based) psoriasis hitting my ears again and going very deaf with sensory nightmares and throbbing headaches ahoy...imagine being drunk without the fun bits. In a lovely bit of symmetry I'm sitting typing this in exactly the same situation, albeit now with the pesky psoriasis now also covering my legs and back. Joy. World Autism Acceptance Week 2025: Sith Happens.

      With the laydees away today at a dance performance in Stirling (ably aided by Ro) Cassidy and I were left to entertain ourselves today.  And what a top day we've had. As regular readers (and folk who know us) will be aware, Cassidy absolutely loves The Riverside Museum in Glasgow ( especially the Sinclair C5 ) and today we realised there was a special "Festival of Fire" event being held by the Scottish Fire Brigade Heritage Trust showcasing both past and present Firefighting appliances and the rich history of the fire service in Scotland. And let's be honest, what proper Autist doesn't love a fire engine?  Alongside the fire engines (and fantastic assortment of vehicles on display) there has been of late a rather nice mini Star Wars exhibition on too, featuring a variety of droids, vehicles and characters that both Cassidy and the girls had visited previously which was finishing today so I thought brilliant we can go see that again too! Day sorted....
