Autism Acceptance Week 2026: The Grand Finale.

So it's the final day of Autism Acceptance Week 2026, possibly I mean to be honest with all the moving stress and the like I've kinda lost track, it allegedly continues for the whole month but most folk get bored by the end of the first day, so I reckoned it was  time to give a round-up of the highs and lows of this years celebration of all things Autistic.

As usual none of the major political parties posted a fucking thing about it, neither did the Prime Minister or the First Minister up here or any MPs/MSPs, none of the schools or colleges mentioned it and my local hospital had no idea about it when I turned up last Thursday dressed as Rainman and sporting my lanyard.

So yes, it seemed to be even more ignored than as usual.

As a bizarre aside I did an X (formally Twitter) search to see if Glasgow City Council had mentioned Autism at all so imagine my surprise when any mention of those two things came from me.

Maybe they should put me in charge and have done with it.

Tho' as a plus point my AUTISM INSIDE t-shirt seemed to make a few folk uncomfortable whilst I was out getting a haircut so swings and roundabouts really. 


 

And after last years plan of "Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) whilst  highlights the intersection between Neurodiversity and global sustainability efforts". The UN went awfully quiet, tho' I'm pretty sure that they're still trying to figure out what the fuck "Showcasing how inclusive policies and practices can drive positive change for autistic individuals worldwide and contribute to the achievement of the SDGs" actually means.

Tho' we all know that whatever it is it's way more important than basic human rights like access to education and simple support for families.

You still follow same old scheme

 

So I retrospect it looks like Autism Awareness Week 2026 has been even more ignored than normal.

Regular readers (are there any?) will have read my review of 2025  and the pressures that we - as an Autistic family - are under (and let's be honest, we wont be the only ones) and probably be shocked and outraged by the situation.

Well if that's the case take that shock and outrage and use it because nothing about any of the situations has changed and it would be nice to have a few more folk onside.

Not just for us but for all the Autistic families denied support and care.

Because we're not just for April.

And we have really good memories when it comes to bearing grudges.

Trust me.

Regular readers may have seen the post from a few weeks back regarding the removal of the seating used primarily by disabled students and their support staff at  City of Glasgow College and how it'd been replaced by a large, self-congratulatory poster. Looking into the issue I became aware that the college principal ( and Chief Executive Officer) Paul Little was behind the decision so decided to email him about it. Alas I received  no reply. Say Hello, Wave Goodbye.

    Absolutely fucking gutted here today, was waiting for Amelia to finish college and found out via X that Dave Ball had died at the tragically young age of 66, so I spent a fair bit of the afternoon sitting on the steps of GoMA listening to Soft Cell on my headphones whilst trying to process the news. And yes, I'll admit there were tears.  You see, as folk who know me (and who've read this blog) will attest, Soft Cell are my favourite band - and Marc Almond is my hero. But that's for another day. I've already posted about the importance of Marc and Dave way back in 2022 but wanted not just to repost it but add a little more Dave to the mix. A kinda text remix if you will. I hope he'd approve.    Being the awkward Autistic artsy teen constantly picked on in school, obsessed with horror films, sci-fi and Warhol, Marc and Dave were a lifeline and Soft Cell's dark electropop perfectly encapsulated everything I felt...and everything that terrified me too.... World Autism Acceptance Week 2025: Sith Happens.

      With the laydees away today at a dance performance in Stirling (ably aided by Ro) Cassidy and I were left to entertain ourselves today.  And what a top day we've had. As regular readers (and folk who know us) will be aware, Cassidy absolutely loves The Riverside Museum in Glasgow ( especially the Sinclair C5 ) and today we realised there was a special "Festival of Fire" event being held by the Scottish Fire Brigade Heritage Trust showcasing both past and present Firefighting appliances and the rich history of the fire service in Scotland. And let's be honest, what proper Autist doesn't love a fire engine?  Alongside the fire engines (and fantastic assortment of vehicles on display) there has been of late a rather nice mini Star Wars exhibition on too, featuring a variety of droids, vehicles and characters that both Cassidy and the girls had visited previously which was finishing today so I thought brilliant we can go see that again too! Day sorted....
